Redbud Organic Farm (Inwood, WV) has run farmers markets and successfully managed an organic CSA program for 7 years, serving over 50 families in the Washington D.C. area and 20 families in the WV Eastern Panhandle.  In an effort to enhance sustainability by marketing to our local community and reducing fossil fuel use, we are offering our CSA service exclusively to Eastern Panhandle consumers.  Joining an organic CSA program is the most direct means of promoting the economic viability of our local farms AND ensuring that farming practices don’t endanger our natural resources.  Because CSA fosters a strong relationship between the producer and the consumer, local residents can influence how their food is grown!

Our local CSA program
provides Eastern Panhandle consumers with fresh, certified organic produce for 20 weeks during the growing season (June - October).  Our CSA members pay in advance at the beginning of the year, providing start-up money for seeds and farm supplies.  We, in turn, grow a variety of vegetables, herbs, and fruit using eco-friendly, organic techniques that preserve our local soil and water resources.  From June to October, we deliver a mixture of crops that are in season on a weekly basis to a designated pick-up site in Shepherdstown, Charles Town, or Martinsburg, WV.  All produce is picked and prepared within 24 hours of delivery, so our members are assured the freshest organic produce available in this area.  The CSA is a great way to get to know who is growing your food and how it’s grown.

The 2008 CSA season runs June 5 - October 16.  Shares will be delivered to the pick-up site (you may choose either Shepherdstown, Charles Town, or Martinsburg WV) by 8 am each Thursday.  A share consists of approximately 1/2 bushel of produce each week, containing a mixture of 5-7 different varieties.  Share contents from 2007 may be viewed here.

What is CSA?
The Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) concept
may be thought of as a mutual commitment between a farm and a community of supporters.  CSA provides a direct link between the producers and consumers of food.  Members' fees, paid in early spring, help pay for seeds, fertilizer, equipment maintenance, labor, etc.In return, our farm provides a healthy supply of seasonal fresh produce throughout the growing season. CSA develops a responsible relationship between people and the food they eat, the land on which it is grown and those who grow it.

This mutually supportive relationship between local farmers and community members fosters an economically stable farming operation in which members are assured the highest quality produce and farmers are guaranteed a reliable market for a diverse selection of crops, as well as the satisfaction of knowing the individuals they feed. CSA reflects an innovative and resourceful strategy to develop a healthy regional food supply and strong local economy, encourage land stewardship, and honor the knowledge and experience of growers working on small to medium scale farms.
